Former Warsaw Teacher Sentenced For Neglect And Aggravated Battery
INDIANAPOLIS — A former Warsaw school teacher was sentenced Thursday, Dec. 26 in Marion County after being accused of injecting her son with feces.
Tiffany Alberts, of Walcott, formerly of the Warsaw area, was convicted of neglect of a dependent and six counts of aggravated battery. She was sentenced to seven years in prison and five years of probation, according to several news reports.
According to previous InkFreeNews reporting, Alberts used a syringe to inject feces into her 15-year-old son’s IV on several occasions between Nov. 13 and 17 of 2016.
At the time, Alberts indicated her actions were motivated by her desire to have her son moved from the ICU to another Riley unit. She believed, “The treatment would be better,” in the other area of the hospital.
According to a Marion County police affidavit from 2016, Albert’s son had been receiving treatment for Leukemia since August at the hospital. He had been released in September but returned to the hospital just days later due to fever, vomiting and diarrhea.
Blood tests done on the cancer patient showed organisms, typically found in feces, caused an infection that medical officials could not explain.
The hospital staff then began monitoring the patient’s room with video surveillance to find out if anyone had been tampering with the patient’s IV. Through the surveillance, the hospital discovered the Albert injecting something into his IV.
When Albert was questioned, she first claimed she was injecting water into the IV to flush the line. She later admitted to injecting her son’s own fecal matter into the IV.
Alberts was charged in 2016 with six counts of aggravated battery and one count of neglect of a dependent, resulting in serious bodily injury.
The doctors treating the patient indicated Alberts’ son could have died from septic shock from the injections.
According to other news reports from earlier in 2019, the boy’s health has since improved.
