Art In Action: Susan Ring Exhibit Opens
By Darla McCammon
A farm near Atwood was the foundation for the current exhibition at Warsaw City Hall Art Gallery. Susan Ring is an artist who can capture just about anything with her paints and make it better than the reality. That farm is where Ring grew up and it provides much of the inspiration for her excellent paintings. You may have seen her work in shows boasting a blue ribbon or a “Best of Show” award. You may also have seen her depiction of rustic old cars and the amazing reflections she incorporates into the resulting painting. I happen to love the work she does in her art that depicts old glass canning jars and the multitude of reflections she is able to capture. Not only is this very difficult to accomplish, but it shows her trademark style that is so pleasing to her clients.
Ring can provide equally excellent results whether she is working in oil, watercolor or pastel. You owe yourself and your family and friends a trip to downtown Warsaw soon so you can view the works by Ring up close in this popular large two-room gallery space. Mayor Thallemer always appreciates each artist that we bring in to enjoy and, even better, admission is free. Thank you Mr. Mayor and council members. You can make it a fun day by also enjoying the nice shops and restaurants that thrive near the City Hall (across from the county courthouse).
Ring graduated from Warsaw High School where she learned from Bill Allen, who was an art teacher there at the time. Ring then honed her skills at Herron School of Art. Ring’s paintings have been on display in the Indiana Statehouse an incredible four times. This is unheard of in the very stiff competition in the Hoosier Women Artist contest: quite an honor.
Too many to list her are her winnings and honors. They will be listed at the exhibit. For this honor, Ring says: “I continue to challenge myself by exploring different subjects and mediums. In watercolors, I express my desire for detail and drawing. Color and motion translate through my oils and pastels. My choice of subject matter depends totally on the spark of inspiration.” Ring also enjoys plein air painting to heighten her views by being outdoors.
The Susan Ring exhibit will go up on Jan. 6 and will be on view until the end of March.
Hours at City Hall are Monday through Friday (except holidays) and 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Parking is available on the street or at the rear of the building. The exhibit is all on the first floor.
