Syracuse-Wawasee Park Foundation Champions Fitness, Fun
SYRACUSE — Syracuse-Wawasee Park Foundation’s mission is to support fitness and fun for the entire community. With that aim in mind, it assists with completing projects and maintenance with Syracuse Parks and Recreation and throughout Turkey Creek Township.
Through repair, replacement and renewal, the foundation keeps facilities and trails safe and ready for use.
During 2019, the foundation’s board, which is composed of volunteers, assisted with funding for improvements at Lakeside Park, Harold Schrock Athletic Complex, Syracuse Community Center, Laudeman Park and trails located in the Syracuse-Wawasee area.
“A particular highlight during the past year has been funding,” Dr. Tom Edington, treasurer for the park foundation, said, noting it has enabled the Trail Committee to pursue a new path through Conklin Bay that connects to the Wawasee Area Conservancy Foundation property on SR 13.
“Looking ahead to 2020, it begins with funding the completion of the Conklin Bay Trail, with some additional work to be completed due to peat bogs in the route,” Edington said.
Improvements to the area youth sports facilities will also be considered. There will also be the Syracuse Community Center’s parking lot lights project, too.
Edington said, “A gradual improvement plan for Laudeman Park is in the works along with a trail master plan that includes connecting more neighborhoods in the area and also encircling Lake Wawasee.”
He added, “The park foundation may be involved in the generous K21 Health Foundation community grant of $200,000 during 2020.”
