Sons, Track Stars Earn Weekly Honors
WINONA LAKE – Grace had four athletes highlighted for their weekly athletic accomplishments.
SONS PULLS DOUBLE NOD
Jaret Sons picked up national recognition after a memorable week for Grace’s men’s basketball team.
Sons was named the NCCAA National Player of the Week and the Crossroads League Player of the Week after helping lead the Lancers to a pair of road wins.
Sons led Grace in scoring during two upsets. Against No. 9 Bethel, he had a career-high 25 points with 10 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 blocks. Grace beat the Pilots 100-95.
He added another double-double with 23 points, 12 boards, 2 assists, 2 blocks and 1 steal to upset No. 17 St. Francis in overtime, 77-76.
For the week, he averaged 24.0 points, 11.0 rebounds, 2.5 blocks and 2.5 assists per game. He also sank nine 3-pointers. To cap it off, Sons scored his 1,000th career point in the win over No. 9 Bethel.
The Lancers (13-5) sit atop the Crossroads League standings with a 5-1 mark, tied with Indiana Wesleyan. Grace is back home on Tuesday night with a pivotal 7 p.m. game against Spring Arbor.
TRACK TRIO TAKES A BOW
Three members of Grace’s track and field team were given honors from the NCCAA and Crossroads League on Monday.
Isaac Brown and Nordia Campbell were named Field Athletes of the Week by both the NCCAA and Crossroads League, and Kyle Smith was the Crossroads League Track Athlete of the Week.
Brown won two events at the Keith Turner Alumni Invitational, claiming the high jump and triple jump titles. His leap of 6-feet-8.25 in the high jump hit the NAIA “A” standard.
Campbell had a part in winning three events. She won two individual races (60-meter dash, 200m) and helped the 4×400 relay win at Trine with a time of 4:08.64. The other members of the 4×400 were Suzanne Sickafoose, Julia Malson and Ashley Stoltzfus.
Smith helped win two events this week. He won the 800 race out of 23 competitors (2:00.07), and the 4×400 relay also won in 3:30.38 along with Brady Willard, Zach Johnson and Dylan Felger.
The Lancers’ next meet is Saturday at Indiana Wesleyan, starting at 11 a.m.
