Motorist Arrested After Using Marijuana 30 Minutes Earlier
WARSAW — A man was recently arrested after driving a vehicle shortly after using marijuana.
Kyle Leonard Williams, 26, 8160 Hickory Ave., Gary, is charged with obstruction of justice, a level 6 felony; driving while suspended, a class A misdemeanor; and operating while intoxicated, a class C misdemeanor.
On Jan. 16, an officer with the Indiana State Police saw a vehicle traveling at a speed higher than the posted speed limit. Upon catching up to the vehicle, the officer discovered that Williams was the registered owner of the vehicle. The officer then learned that Williams had a suspended license and pulled him over.
According to court documents, the officer immediately noticed the smell of marijuana coming from Williams’ vehicle. The officer also noticed that Williams’ eyes were red, indicating that he was possibly intoxicated. A K9 unit at the scene also made a positive alert on the vehicle.
Williams admitted he had used marijuana approximately 30 minutes prior to being pulled over. He was then taken to the Warsaw Police Department, where field sobriety tests were conducted. The officer found Williams to be intoxicated due to his performance and obtained a search warrant for Williams’ blood.
However, Williams refused to submit to the blood draw, which resulted in the obstruction charge.
Williams has an initial hearing regarding this case at 8:15 a.m. March 6, in Kosciusko County Superior Court 2.
