Whitko Students Receive Awards In Calendar Contest

LARWILL – Electric Consumer hosted its 23rd annual student calendar contest for the 2021 cooperative calendar.
The contest provides young Hoosier artists a unique opportunity to express themselves and develop their artistic talent while possibly earning cash prizes and statewide acclaim. The contest is statewide, open to all grade levels, k-12. Each grade level competes for their designated month; first grade gets January, second grade has February, etc. Artwork from all over the state of Indiana were entered in the contest. Whitko Jr/Sr High School Art students continued a successful tradition this year:
Award of Merit: This means these students make the first round of judging in their grade division, they only choose the best 25 from each grade level for the award of merit. Winning Whitko artists recipients include:
- Nathaniel Moore – 10th
- Cai Davis – 10th
- Slater Craig – 10th
- Hannah Brown – 10th
- Hailee Bennett – 11th
- Taro Ejiri – 11th
- Matthew Collier – 11th
- Abby Arter – 11th
- Ella Kay Danner – 12th
Whitko also won the top honors for the 10th-grade division, October artist of the month, in the state contest (only 1 winner per month: Sophomore, Elizabeth Miller was awarded a $200 cash prize. This year the winners will be presented in the November issue of Indiana Connection. The winning works will also be viewable on the website, IndianaConnection.org. Elizabeth’s work, along with the other winning pieces, will be part of the annual Hoosier Salon Art Exhibit from Aug. 29 – October 25 at the Indiana State Museum.
Whitko JSHS has had at least one winner every year since 2001 appear in the state calendar, except in 2015. Whitko Art teacher, Daniel Malicki, is proud of his students’ accomplishments and their pursuit of excellence in art.
