Grace Athletes Making Impact Early On
WINONA LAKE – Grace loaded up on player recognition in the Crossroads League and beyond.
Kohler earns Player of the Week recognition
Brooke Kohler picked up national recognition for Grace College’s women’s soccer team when she was named the NCCAA and Crossroads League Defensive Player of the Week.
The Lady Lancers, who are ranked No. 14 in the NAIA, kicked their season off with a 6-0 win over Point Park on Saturday.
Kohler helped Grace’s defense stifle Point Park’s attack. The Lady Lancers allowed only two shots on goal on their way to a clean sheet win over the Pioneers.
Kohler also provided a spark on the offensive end. She added an assist and capitalized on a free kick to net her first career goal.
The Lady Lancers will be back in action on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. for an NAIA Top 25 clash, as Grace hosts No. 7 Indiana Wesleyan.
Hernandez-Rios recognized by NCCAA
Grace College’s men’s cross country squad picked up a national honor in the first meet of the season.
Bryan Hernandez-Rios was named the NCCAA Runner of the Week after posting his second-best career time (26:19).
Hernandez-Rios finished with the 27th-best time out of 214 runners at the IWU Twilight Classic on Friday night.
The men’s cross country team finished eighth at the meet. They will travel to Taylor on Friday to take part in the Ray Bullock Invite.
Grace duo nabs Player of Week honors
Grace College’s volleyball team picked up two more awards on Monday after its stellar start.
Makaela Lochmueller was named the Crossroads League Attacker of the Week, and Julia Nagy was the league’s Defender of the Week.
Grace enjoyed an unbeaten week, taking down Mt. Vernon Nazarene on the road as well as St. Francis (who is receiving votes in the NAIA).
Lochmueller was the model of efficiency last week. She tallied 2.7 kills/set on an impressive .514 percentage. She did not commit an attack error all week. Defensively she also provided one solo block and seven block assists.
Nagy continued her sensational start as Grace’s libero, amassing 5.4 digs/set. She was perfect in serve receive all week in 32 attempts as well.
Grace has already won three awards from the league after just two weeks; Anna Frey won the league’s Attacker of the Week award seven days ago.
The Lady Lancers face their stiffest test of the season to date on Wednesday. Grace hosts No. 7 Indiana Wesleyan at 7 p.m. in a battle of the last two 3-0 teams in the league.
