Grace College Professor Co-Authors Career Counseling Book
News Release
WINONA LAKE — A Grace College professor has authored several chapters in a career counseling book.
Dr. Krystal Humphreys, assistant professor for Grace College’s online Master of Clinical Mental Health Counseling program, authored three chapters of the new textbook, “Career Counseling: Theory, Practice, and Application.”
“This book is important for counselors because it focuses on the foundation of our profession. A lot of counseling students do not realize the importance of career development and counseling. They go into the profession wanting to work with mental health concerns, not realizing that career development plays a huge role in mental health,” said Humphreys.
After nearly a decade in the field, Humphreys’ client base has included impoverished students, hospitalized children and adolescents, teen boys associated with gang activity, women, young adults, faith-based post-abortion recovery groups and survivors of sex trafficking.
“As I worked with each of these groups, I quickly realized the importance of career development,” said Humphreys. “Specifically, my work with adolescent trauma victims, women post-abortion and survivors of sex trafficking showed me that career development is often interrelated to trauma,” she said.
Humphreys holds a Ph.D. in counselor education and supervision from Texas Tech University as well as two master’s degrees. Her research has been published in numerous journals, and she has presented more than 15 times on topics including non-suicidal self-injury, solution-focused brief therapy and sand tray with military teens, cyberbullying and counseling Hispanic teens. She is currently working on several journal articles related to sex trafficking prevention and restoration.
Humphreys teaches a number of online courses at Grace College, which was recently named in the top three best online master’s in mental health counseling by College Rank.
