Warsaw Adds New Football Opponent, Switches Basketball Contest
Press Releases
WARSAW – The Warsaw athletic department announced a pair of scheduling notes Thursday, one for football and one for boys basketball.
Football Adds Dublin Contest
The Warsaw Tigers will open up the 2021 football season with a new opponent, and for just the fifth time on record, that opponent will be from outside the state of Indiana.
The WCHS Athletic Department finalized a one-year agreement with Dublin Coffman High School to play at Fisher Field on Aug. 20, 2021, at 7:30 p.m.
Dublin Coffman is a school located in Dublin, Ohio, which is on the northwest side of Columbus. It has about 2,000 students in the top four grades. It is the oldest of the three existing high schools in Dublin.
The Shamrocks (often referred to as the Rocks), went 8-1 last season, including an unbeaten (6-0) regular season and two playoff wins in Division I – Ohio’s largest class.
At their signing day last month, six of their senior players signed letters of intent, including to Minnesota, Cincinnati and West Virginia.
The Rocks claim to have put eight players into the NFL, with the most recognizable being former Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn and former Colts running back Vince Workman.
“This is a quality opponent, to be sure,” said Tiger head coach Bart Curtis.
Warsaw hasn’t played a non-Indiana school since 1955, when it wrapped up a two-year run against Mooseheart (Ill.). It’s also played Kalamazoo in 1930 and Niles (Mich.) in 1922.
Warsaw’s 2021 will continue at Michigan City in week two and then Plymouth comes to Fisher Field to open Northern Lakes Conference play the following week. Warsaw will make its first trip in almost 40 years to Steele Stadium at Mishawaka in week four. That will be followed by NLC games against Northridge (H), Goshen (A), Wawasee (H), NorthWood (H) and Concord (A).
Warsaw will once again be in Class 6-A for the playoffs, but an announcement on which sectional they will participate in will be announced later this year.
Boys Basketball Drops CMA, Adds Washington
Warsaw will no longer take on Culver Academy on Friday, Feb. 19, which was scheduled as a road game. Instead, Warsaw will travel to South Bend to take on Washington. The game will take place on Saturday, Feb. 20, with a 3 p.m. JV tip with the varsity to follow.
