Warsaw Library: An interview with Author Kelly Milner Hall

WARSAW – You may have seen interviews with bubbly, animated children’s fiction authors, but have you ever wondered about children’s non-fiction writers? Are they a dry, boring lot? Well, I’d like you to meet Kelly Milner Halls, a Spokane, Washington-based writer who loves fun non-fiction.
Warsaw Community Public Library carries eight of her books, with some of them available as e-books, as well. From “In Search of Sasquatch” to “Mysteries of the Mummy Kids” to “Tiger in Trouble”, this author has helped to make this genre a “can’t miss”. I was able to converse with this wonderful person and ask her some questions. I think you’ll enjoy the interview.
AM: Do you write to express yourself, or to impart a message to your readers?
KMH: I write because I’m terribly curious and I know kids are too. So I write to answer my questions and the questions I think kids have, too.
AM: Do you ever write about “heavy” things?
KMH: I love weird things most, but I have written about heavy things like World War II and the sinking of the Titanic. I also wrote about saving a zoo during the war in Iraq.
AM: Is it scary to put yourself and your thoughts out into the world?
KMH: It was when I first started, but I’ve been doing it for 30 years now. It’s not scary now, but I always hold my breath until I hear from kids. If things go well, they tell me they like the books I write.
AM: Do you ever write in verse?
KMH: I haven’t, but I love novels in verse. I think it’s a great way to tell a story.
AM: What other forms does your personal creativity take?
KMH: I like to paint. That’s creative, too.
