‘Taps Across The Water’ Set For Dusk Sunday
SYRACUSE — To honor Memorial Day, Chautauqua-Wawasee and Syracuse American Legion Post No. 223 are hosting “Taps Across the Water” at 9:09 p.m. or dusk, according to Apple phone time, Sunday, May 30.
The playing of taps will be performed in synchrony by 12 buglers positioned at Lake Wawasee, Syracuse Lake and Lake Papakeechie so it’s audible to all lake residents and boaters.
Buglers Keith Brauer and Bill Huffman will be positioned at Syracuse Lake. Brauer will be at Pier No. 442 while Huffman will be at Medusa.
Chris Longenbaugh will be positioned at Papakeechie near “the drain spot where water runs toward Wawasee.” Other buglers participating include: Tony Pawlicki, Wawasee High School band teacher; Kris Stump, Syracuse Elementary band teacher; Dan Bachman, located at the sail club on Waco; Faith Bradley, will be positioned most likely at Macy’s slip; Nadia Whalen, Wawasee High School student; George Simpson, positioned near Wawasee Yacht Club; and Dave Wisler will be positioned at Kale Island.
A minute of silence will be observed at 9:08 p.m., Apple phone time, with the playing of taps following a minute later at dusk. Organizers ask all activity on and off the lakes come to a halt for the moment of silence and the playing of taps.
Any horn players who are interested in participating may call Mark Knecht at (703) 489-7124.
