AKRON — Those who want to support small business owners just starting out can do so in Akron on Saturday, July 3.
Young Entrepreneur Day, put on by the Akron branch of Lake City Bank, is 9-11 a.m. Saturday outside the bank. The event is returning after an about 10-year hiatus, said the bank’s Jane Murphy, who created it.
The bank loans $10 to kids ages 5-11 for them to create a business. That’s the only money they’re allowed to use for it, said Murphy.
The children then set up shop to sell their products to the public and they keep their profits.
Murphy said in years past kids have sold glow-in-the-dark tattoos. Four girls combined their funds one time to sell tacos, she said.
“I hope it just makes them more aware of businesses and the dedication it takes to run a business,” she said. “Instead of handing them a flower, we’re teaching them to grow a flower.”
