Woodson, Brey Among IBCA Guest Speakers
Press Release
INDIANAPOLIS – A session featuring new Indiana University men’s basketball coach Mike Woodson and his staff will headline the 2021 IBCA Clinic on Saturday, Oct. 16 at Lawrence North High School in Indianapolis.
Notre Dame men’s coach Mike Brey and Miami (Ohio) men’s coach Jack Owens also will hold sessions at the in-person portion of the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association’s annual gathering, which was moved from its traditional April date to October because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Cost to attend the clinic is $50 for current-year IBCA members and $100 for non-members. The clinic program will begin at 1 p.m. on Oct. 16.
Woodson, a 1980 Indiana graduate and former Broad Ripple High School star, was appointed the new IU coach on March 28. The former Big Ten Player of the Year went on to an 11-year NBA as a player and followed by coaching for 25 seasons with multiple NBA teams, including stints as a head coach from 2004-10 with the Atlanta Hawks and 2012-14 with the New York Knicks. He most recently was an assistant coach with the Knicks prior to accepting the position with the Hoosiers.
Others on Woodson’s new staff include assistant coaches Dane Fife, Kenya Hunter and Yasir Rosemond as well as director of basketball administration Armond Hill and director of athletic performance Clif Marshall.
Brey has been coach at Notre Dame since July 2000, compiling a 448-248 record with the Fighting Irish with 12 NCAA Tournament appearances and five other postseason berths in 21 seasons. His 2014-15 team compiled a program-best 32-6 record, won the ACC Tournament and advanced to the NCAA “Elite Eight.” Brey, a George Washington University graduate, served as an assistant coach at Duke for eight years and head coach at Delaware for five years with a record of 99-52 before moving to South Bend.
Owens has completed four seasons as coach at Miami, guiding the RedHawks to a 56-65 overall mark, including a 12-11 finish in 2020-21. A graduate of Indianapolis Washington High School, Owens played collegiately at Murray State, Howard (Md.) Community College and Eastern Illinois University before entering the coaching ranks. He coached one year each at EIU, Howard Community College and Barton County (Kan.) Community College before assisting Matt Painter for 15 seasons (one at EIU, five at Southern Illinois and nine a Purdue) prior to becoming the head man at Miami.
In addition to the featured speakers, the 2021 clinic will include an awards program that recognizes both 2020 and 2021 IBCA award winners, an issue-and-answers session with IBCA leadership and a round-table session with former coaches Charles Mair, Dave Nicholson and Virgil Sweet.
The clinic in October is planned to be the first of two clinics in the 2021-22 school year. Plans call for the next IBCA clinic to return to its traditional date in April 2022.
As a reminder, the IBCA membership year runs from Aug. 1 through July 31. Annual membership dues are $45 for high school coaches. The annual membership fee is discounted to just $35 if a coach joins between Aug. 1 and Dec. 31. Coaches may go to the IBCA website – ibcacoaches.com – to join the organization, renew membership or register for the clinic.
