After winning twice on the opening day of the Liz Hossler Classic, Grace’s volleyball team was unable to replicate that success on Saturday.
The Lady Lancers beat No. 24 Cornerstone and Indiana Tech on Friday, but Grace fell 3-0 to Concordia and 3-1 to Cumberland on Saturday.
In the opener, the Cardinals gave Grace little room to attack in a 3-0 win. The Lady Lancers hit at a .091 attack percentage for the match with 31 kills and 22 errors.
The Cardinals won 25-20, 25-22 and 25-21 to complete the sweep. Grace led 16-12 in the first set, but Concordia ended the set on a 13-4 run to take the set.
The second set could have gone either way with a tied score late at 21-21. But two kills and an ace gave Concordia momentum in a three-point win.
Grace again led late in the third set, holding a slight 20-19 edge. The Cardinals responded with five straight points, however, en route to the sweep.
The final match of the tournament saw the Lady Lancers fall short in a comeback bid against Cumberland.
Cumberland won the opener 25-21 and coasted to a 25-10 win in the second set.
Grace had no intention of being swept, however. The Lady Lancers dominated the third set, winning 25-10. Cassadi Colbert had a kill on the final play.
The fourth set was fiercely competitive. The teams traded points down the stretch with the score eventually knotted at 23-23. But a kill and a block on the final two rallies gave Cumberland the 25-23 victory to clinch the match.
The Lady Lancers return home on Wednesday to resume Crossroads League play. Grace hosts Mt. Vernon Nazarene on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Manahan Orthopaedic Capital Center.
