Tennis Results: Sept. 18
Marian Women 6, Grace 1
A short-handed Grace women’s tennis squad was unable to keep pace with No. 25 Marian on Saturday.
The Knights (7-1, 7-1 Crossroads League) won 6-1 in the Crossroads League regular season finale.
Grace had already secured the No. 4 seed in next week’s CL Tournament before playing on Saturday. As a result, the Lady Lancers (6-3, 5-3 CL) will host fifth-seeded Huntington on Tuesday at Miller Athletic Complex for the quarterfinals. The winner will advance to the semifinals for a likely meeting with top seed Indiana Wesleyan.
Grace could not find a winner in doubles’ competition on Saturday. Kiersten Martin and Jenna Lewis were the closest with a 6-3 defeat at No. 2 doubles.
Anna Graves was the lone victor for the Lady Lancers in singles’ play. Graves registered an impressive win at No. 1 singles with a scoreline of 6-4, 7-6 (10-1).
The Knights wrapped up the remaining singles’ matches in straight sets.
Marian Men 4, Grace 3
The Lancers hit a roadblock on their way to the postseason, falling 4-3 at Marian. Grace captured the doubles point, but the Knights came back to win four of the six singles matches to claim the victory. The loss drops the Lancers (8-2, 6-2 CL) into the third seed in the upcoming Crossroads League Tournament.
Ramiro Candia and Fabricio Galvan won 6-4 at No. 2 doubles, while Max Rozas and Milan Savic took No. 3 doubles 6-3.
Rozas won his No. 2 singles match 6-4, 6-4 to give Grace a 2-0 lead overall, but Marian ripped off three straight wins to claim a 3-2 advantage. Facundo Paredes evened the match by winning 3-6, 6-1, 10-3 at No. 5 singles, setting the stage for the final match to finish. Ivan Antinori split the first two sets at No. 6 singles, but couldn’t pull off the victory.
The Lancers will host Goshen in the Crossroads League Tournament on Tuesday.
