Kosciusko County
Officers with the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Office investigated the following accidents:
- 11:06 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 24, North SR 19, north of West CR 1000N, Etna Green. Driver: Jeremiah L. Miller, 17, North SR 19, Etna Green. Miller was traveling southbound on North SR 19 near the intersection of West CR 1000N, Etna Green. Due to the heavy wind and rain, his vehicle was pulled into the gravel lining the west side of the roadway. His vehicle exited the roadway before hitting a small tree. Damage: Up to $5,000.
- 7:43 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 24, North SR 19, south of West CR 1100N, Nappanee. Driver: Zachary A. Blackburn, 28, Vernon Street, Nappanee. Blackburn was traveling northbound on SR 19 when his vehicle collided with a horse. Damage: Up to $10,000.
- 4:33 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 24, SR 13, south of East CR 500N, North Webster. Driver: Eric J. Barker, 51, EMS T13 Lane, Leesburg. Barker pulled out of a private drive onto SR 13, North Webster, to travel north. Barker lost control of his vehicle on the wet road, and it slide off the east side of the road. It then hit a small rise, causing it to overturn. Damage: Up to $50,000.
- 2:57 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 24, East CR 350N, west of North Saddlebrook Lane, Warsaw. Driver: Benjamin J. Olivarez, 25, EMS B48 Lane, Warsaw. Olivarez was traveling westbound on CR 350N, Warsaw, and drove off the north side of the road, His vehicle hit two mailboxes, a pole and a fence. Olivarez smelled of alcohol. He tested 0.16%. He was taken to the hospital for a blood draw and then booked for OWI into the jail. Damage: Up to $50,000.
- 7:30 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 24, North SR 13, north of East CR 400N, Warsaw. Driver: John M. Miretti, 39, East Backwater Road, North Webster. Miretti was traveling southbound on North SR 13 near East CR 400N, Warsaw, when his vehicle collided with a deer. Damage: Up to $2,500.
- 2:43 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 24, East US 30, east of East CR 250S, Pierceton. Driver: Heather L. Gurney, 33, Lotus Blossom Place, Fort Wayne. Gurney was traveling eastbound on US 30, Pierceton, when a deer collided with her vehicle. Damage: Up to $5,000.
- 8:07 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 23, West US 30, west of North CR 875W, Etna Green. Driver: Kaylan L. Davis, 26, Raritan Drive, Valparaiso. Davis was traveling eastbound on US 30, Etna Green, when a deer collided with her vehicle. Davis was treated on scene for injuries. Damage: Up to $25,000.
- 6:42 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 23, South Country Club Road, south of East Seymour Midwest Drive, Warsaw. Drivers: Unknown; and Sarah L. Johnson, 34, Anchorage Road, Warsaw. Johnson said while traveling southbound on South Country Club Lane, Warsaw, she attempted to make a left hand turn into Country Club Crossing. Her vehicle was hit by another vehicle during the turn. The other driver had left the scene prior to police’s arrival. Johnson and her passengers were transported to the hospital. Damage: Up to $10,000.
- 6:12 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 23, North CR 650E, south of East CR 200N, Pierceton. Driver: Michael T. McCandless, 51, Van Buren Street, Defiance, Ohio. McCandless was traveling southbound on North CR 650E, Pierceton. After navigating the curves in the roadway at East CR 200N, his vehicle left the the west edge of the roadway for an unknown reason. The vehicle left the roadway on the west side of the road, returning to the roadway. Tire marks indicate that the vehicle then traveled left of the center line of the roadway south of the intersection. It appeared that the vehicle, a motorcycle, was laid down at the east side of the roadway while still traveling south. McCandless was ejected from the vehicle and slid through the grass in the ditch on the east side of the road. The motorcycle traveled off the roadway, landing in a cornfield. McCandless had minor facial lacerations/bleeding and complained of shoulder pain. He was taken by Lutheran Air Ambulance to a hospital. It was later reported that he had a lacerated spleen and broken arm as well as other internal injuries. It was later reported by his sister that he was in stable condition after the crash. He admitted to using alcohol before using the motorcycle. An officer conducted an OWI investigation. Damage: Up to $25,000.
- 5:32 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 23, East Pierceton Road, Warsaw. Driver: James D. Aikins, 39, EMS B48 A Lane, Warsaw. Aikins was traveling westbound on East Pierceton Road, Warsaw, when his vehicle hit a deer. Damage: Up to $5,000.
- 5:28 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 23, South Packerton Road, south of East CR 1000S, Claypool. Driver: Elizabeth A. Foust, 68, West Fifth Street, North Manchester. Foust was traveling southbound on Packerton Road at the intersection of East CR 1000S, Claypool, when her vehicle left the road and hit a post. Foust was transported by ambulance to the hospital. Damage: Up to $5,000.
- 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 23, West Old Road 30, east of North CR 650W, Warsaw. Driver: Walter R. Tucker, 78, South SR 15, Warsaw. Tucker was traveling westbound on Old Road 30, Warsaw, when his vehicle left the south side of the roadway for an unknown reason. His vehicle came to rest in a small body of water. Per medics on scene, the driver possibly had a medical episode while driving. He was transported to a medical hospital for further evaluation. Damage: Up to $5,000.
- 8:20 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 23, East CR 200N, north of North CR 400E, Warsaw. Drivers: Aron B. Howe, 24, Anchorage Road, Warsaw; and Gary A. Young, 39, East CR 950S, South Whitley. Howe was traveling westbound on East CR 200N, Warsaw, when his brakes engaged and then disengaged before he could come to a stop. His vehicle hit Young’s. Damage: Up to $10,000.
- 1:31 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 23, US 30, west of North CR 350W, Warsaw. Driver: Brian S. Hayward, 54, North CR 875W, Etna Green. Hayward was traveling westbound on US 30 approaching South CR 350W, Warsaw, when a deer collided with his vehicle. Damage: Up to $10,000.
- 6:27 p.m. Friday, Oct. 22, East CR 200N, east of North CR 400E, Warsaw. Driver: Catherine S. Rapp, 63, North CR 300E, Warsaw. Rapp was traveling eastbound on East CR 200N, Warsaw, when a deer collided with her vehicle. Damage: Up to $5,000.
- 6:03 a.m. Friday, Oct. 22, West CR 500N, east of North CR 200W, Warsaw. Driver: William M. Hyde, 48, North CR 200W, Warsaw. Hyde was traveling eastbound on West CR 500N, Warsaw, when his vehicle hit a deer. Damage: Up to $10,000.
Claypool
Officers with the Claypool Police Department investigated the following accidents:
- 12:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 24, South SR 15, north of Dixie Drive, Silver Lake. Driver: Thomas S. Johnson, 78, CR 108, Hilliard, Fla. Johnson was towing a camper southbound on SR 15 just north of Dixie Drive in Silver Lake. His vehicle started to hydroplane. He lost control of the camper, which caused the truck and camper to spin around in the roadway and off the east side of the road facing northbound. Damage: Up to $10,000.
- 4:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 22, East CR 1000S, west of South CR 600E, Claypool. Driver: Larry E. Konkle, 54, Fisher Avenue, Warsaw. Konkle was traveling westbound on CR 1000S east of CR 600E, Claypool, when his vehicle crossed over the center line and ran off the roadway into a yard at 6627 E. 1000S, North Manchester. His vehicle continued in the yard and struck landscaping rocks before going back on the roadway. Konkle made no effort to contact the property owners of the yard and left the scene. A witness began to follow Konkle due to his driving and called Kosciusko County Dispatch who contacted police. Konkle was arrested for operating while intoxicated with a controlled substance in the body. Damage: Up to $1,000.
Warsaw
Officers with the Warsaw Police Department investigated the following accidents:
- 8 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 24, US 30, east of Parker Street, Warsaw. Driver: Griffen A. Beliles, 18, Lincoln Highway, Bourbon. Beliles was traveling westbound on US 30 headed toward the Parker Street intersection, Warsaw. He said his vehicle began to hydroplane and he lost control of it. The vehicle went off the road and into a ditch. Damage: Up to $5,000.
- 11:22 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 24, Jalynn Street and Walton Boulevard, Warsaw. Drivers: Jayden A. Stratton, 17, EMS R4B Lane, Pierceton; and Shirley J. Tatter, 88, Arlington Lane, Warsaw. Stratton was traveling northbound on the south Walton Boulevard extension on the south side of Jalynn Street, Warsaw. He said he stopped at the stop sign on Walter Way and waited for traffic to clear to cross over Jalynn Street and continue on to Walter Way. He said he looked left but may have not looked right before he attempted to cross the intersection. He entered the intersection and Tatter’s vehicle came in front of him from the right. His vehicle hit hers. Tatter was checked out at the scene due to being shaken up. Damage: Up to $10,000.
- 10:27 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 24, 2680 Escalade Way, Warsaw. Driver: Cynthia J. Buckholz, 62, West Crystal Lake Road, Warsaw. Buckholz said she was parking facing west toward the Physician’s Urgent Care building, Warsaw. She said she was not sure what happened but her vehicle accelerated over the curb and hit a brick portion of the building. Damage: Up to $2,500.
- 4:04 p.m. Friday, Oct. 22, East Winona Avenue and South Scott Street, Warsaw. Drivers: Renee E. Hernandez, 53, East Winona Avenue, Warsaw; and Nathaniel B. Meyer, 21, East Center Street, Warsaw. Hernandez said she was traveling eastbound on East Winona Avenue, approaching the intersection of South Scott Street, Warsaw. She said she was unsure exactly what happened, but as she was approaching the intersection, she was trying to get something out of her purse. When she looked up, her vehicle hit Meyer’s. Hernandez was issued a citation for not having insurance. Damage: Up to $2,500.
