- The name “March” comes from the Roman god of war, Mars. For many years, March, being the start of spring, was also the start of the New Year. Much of Europe used March as the start of the year. Britain used March 25 as the beginning of the New Year until 1752.
- March 1, 1932 — the Lindbergh Kidnapping. Charles Augustus Lindbergh Jr., 20-month-old son of aviators Charles Lindbergh and Anne Morrow Lindbergh, was abducted from his crib in the upper floor of the Lindberghs’ home, in New Jersey.
- March 13, 1943 — A plot to kill Hitler by German army officers failed, as a bomb planted aboard his plane failed to explode due to a faulty detonator.
- March 5, 1963 — Country singers Patsy Cline, Cowboy Copas and Hawkshaw Hawkins were killed in a plane crash near Camden, Tenn. They were traveling to Nashville after appearing at a benefit concert for the widow of Kansas City disc jockey ‘Cactus’ Jack Call, who had died in a car crash. On March 7, country singer Jack Anglin was killed in a car crash on his way to Cline’s funeral. Cline was the first country singer to cross over as a pop artist.
- March 2, 1967 — The Beatles’ song “Michelle” is named Song of the Year at the Grammy Awards.
- March 28, 1979 — Near Harrisburg, Pa., the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant accident occurred in which uranium in the reactor core overheated due to the failure of a cooling valve. A pressure relief valve then stuck causing the water level to plummet, threatening a catastrophic nuclear meltdown. The accident resulted in the release of radioactive steam into the atmosphere, and created a storm of controversy over the necessity and safety of nuclear power plants.
- March 20, 1995 — A nerve gas attack occurred on the Tokyo subway system during rush hour, resulting in 12 people killed and 5,000 injured. Japanese authorities later arrest the leader and members of a Japanese religious cult suspected in the attack.
