WARSAW — A GoFundMe has been established for a Warsaw girl who is battling a rare auto-immune disease.
Six-year-old Addilyn Kubley was diagnosed with Shwachman-Diamond Syndrome (SDS) at a young age. SDS affects many parts of the body, particularly the bone marrow, pancreas and skeletal system.
On March 8, 2022, Addilyn’s family was told by doctors that she is in bone marrow failure and there are cancer cells present in her body.
“Addilyn spiked a fever toward the end of June, which landed her in the ICU,” read the GoFundMe’s description. “Aside from spiking a fever, they also found out that she had pneumonia. Having a compromised immune system makes it harder for Addilyn to fight pneumonia on her own. She began having troubles with her blood pressure and her oxygen, which required her to need to be put on oxygen. Things quickly worsened and she needed to be placed on a ventilator.”
According to Addilyn’s mother, Nicole Kubley, Addilyn was about three weeks away from getting to come home when she developed pneumonia and ended up in the ICU.
In a Facebook post on a support page titled “Addilyn’s Journey,” which provides updates on Addilyn’s condition, Nicole posted the following update on July 15:
“The plan right now is to put a trach tube in in two weeks,” read the post. “Having a trach isn’t the worst thing. It’s the thought of another surgery for her. Another life change for her. Another battle. 24-hour nursing care. A feeding tube. Not being able to speak depending on the ventilator. It’s a lot. A lot for us to process. The biopsy showed that her lungs are in bad shape. There is a virus attacking her lungs and they are shifting her treatment. I need her to improve.”
Harrison Elementary School representatives are also fundraising for Addilyn through T-shirt sales. Proceeds from the fundraiser will be donated to help offset medical costs.
“I need you guys to pray with us,” continued the July 15 post. “Pray that there is a huge improvement in two weeks so that when the time comes, they don’t need to do the trach. Pray that this virus leaves her lungs and they recover.”
As of Friday, July 15, Addilyn’s GoFundMe has raised just over $5,000. All proceeds from the GoFundMe will go to the Kubley family for any expenses incurred during Addilyn’s hospitalization.
