Timeline From The Past: 1995 Syracuse Police Saga
Editor’s note: This is a retrospective article that runs a few times a month on InkFreeNews that relies on files from the Kosciusko County Historical Society
2002 — Charges against a Warsaw woman were upgraded to murder Oct. 25 and she is being held without bond while awaiting trial. Beatriz Cuautle is alleged to be the mother of an infant that was found dead in a trash can at Kralis Brothers Foods Inc., 2601 S. Tinkey Road, Mentone, where Cuautle apparently gave birth in a bathroom the afternoon of Oct. 21.
Cuautle then returned to her job at the chicken processing plant and a janitor found the dead infant.
1995 — The saga involving the Syracuse Police Department continued. Chief Bob Ziller ended 10 years in that position by resigning after the threat of legal action by Kosciusko County Prosecutor David Kolbe.
The town initally refused to take action against Ziller, who was accused by fellow officers of urging them not to arrest drunk driving suspects.
Meanwhile, two officers who spoke out against Ziller alleged various efforts by the town to retaliate.
July 23, 1970 — A Winona Lake resident who celebrated her 21st birthday Thursday saved the lives of a mother duck and her three-day-old ducklings when she noted they were saturated with oil.
Sue Howard, of 215 Lakeside Drive, summoned State Rep. Thames Mauzy, who said today he will continue his efforts to stop the pollution of Winona Lake. Mauzy has been concerned about the lake for several years and has been working closely with state and local conservation personnel in studying the situation.
Mauzy was disturbed when he went to Winona Lake and talked with Sue and her brother and sisters, Tom, Sally and Mary, about the number of three-day-old ducklings covered with oil and unable to swim.
