WARSAW — Fredy A. Vasquez Perez, 24, West Old Road 30, Lot 90, Warsaw, was airlifted to Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne, following a two-vehicle collision at Detroit Street and Gilliam Drive Saturday, Aug. 13. The crash was reported at 9:34 p.m.
According to the police report, Perez was found unconscious in the driver’s seat of his 2004 Oldsmobile Alero and, due to the unknown nature of his injuries, was airlifted to the hospital. Warsaw-Wayne Fire Territory extricated Perez from his vehicle.
Also injured were Shakira I. Rico, 16, Monument Road, Summertown, Tenn.; and a 15-year-old passenger in her vehicle. The driver and her passenger complained of pain to the knee/lower leg/foot areas. Both were checked by paramedics and signed off. A third passenger was not injured. Rico was driving a 2004 Nissan Armada.
Perez later told police he was stopped on Gilliam Drive, attempting to turn left onto SR 15. He stated he was following a friend’s vehicle and when the friend pulled out onto SR 15, he did not wait on traffic and just followed his friend. Perez’s vehicle was hit on the driver’s side by the Rico vehicle.
Rico told police she was southbound on SR 15 and as she approached Gilliam Drive, a vehicle pulled out in front of her. She honked her horn because it was too close, then the second vehicle pulled out right in front of her and she could not brake in time to prevent the accident.
A witness told police Perez did not yield to traffic and pulled out directly in front of the Rico vehicle.
All air bags in both vehicles deployed.
Rico was cited for an alcohol related infraction.
Damage was estimated up to $100,000.
