WARSAW — Though they’ve been serving with the Warsaw Police Department for awhile, five officers are officially part of the WPD after being sworn in on Friday, Dec. 16.
The service took place at the Warsaw Board of Public Works and Safety meeting. The officers included Sam Bohnke, Brandon Fugate, Dustin Kreft, Ryan Piper and Jeremy Rau.
A large group came out for the swearing-in ceremony, including fellow WPD officers, family and friends.
“That was awesome,” said Warsaw Mayor Joe Thallemer after the five took photos with their co-workers and supporters, noting that gets the WPD close to being fully staffed.
He called that “a great testimony to the recruiting and quality of applicants, just the whole deal here and it’s really gratifying to have that done.”
Later on in the meeting, the board approved hiring Drew Brewton as an officer. He’s coming over from the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Office.
That means Warsaw has almost reached full capacity, which would be 42 officers.
“I just want to again personally thank the families of our police officers who were sworn in today,” added Thallemer at the end of the meeting. “You saw the family members and the children and these guys train hard, don’t have an easy job, sometimes they’re out under difficult circumstances and their families are at home waiting for them to come home and I just am always touched that the families come and we can really see what’s behind the face of our police officers.”
The next Warsaw Board of Public Works and Safety meeting is at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 6, at Warsaw City Hall.
