UPDATED: Homeowner Injured When Car Hits House

PALESTINE — Bernice D. Meadows, South CR 600W, Mentone, was injured when a car struck her home and detached garage early Sunday, Jan. 1.
Meadows complained of pain in her left shoulder and right knee and complained of a possible broken left wrist. She was taken to the hospital by paramedics.
Brandon E. Hoffman, 18, South CR 600W, Silver Lake, driver of the vehicle, also suffered minor bleeding to the face. A passenger in his vehicle, Branson C. McBrier, 19, South CR 1000W, Mentone, suffered minor bleeding to the elbow/lower arm. Hoffman denied medical treatment at the scene. McBrier was treated and released at the scene.
Hoffman was arrested for operating a vehicle while intoxicated, minor consumption of alcohol and refusal to submit to chemical test. He was held on $700 cash bond.
Emergency personnel were called to 2980 S. 600W, Palestine, at 2:50 a.m. after Hoffman’s vehicle struck Meadows’ home and garage.
Hoffman told police he as northbound on CR 600W in the area south of the residence. Due to slick roads, he was unable to negotiate the curve. His 2014 Chevrolet went off the roadway, south of the driveway and struck a tree stump. The vehicle continued through the yard and collided with the house and detached garage before continuing between the two buildings and hitting a tree.
Meadows was sleeping in the room at the time of the collision when it was struck by the vehicle
Damage was estimated up to $50,000.
Seward Township/Burket Fire Department along with the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene. 1-800 Board Up was contacted by the fire department to secure the hole in the house.
