Warren D. Vanhook
Warren D. Vanhook, 82, formerly of Etna Green, died Nov. 21, 2022. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Ruth (McGee) Vanhook; his children, Dawn (Dennis) Worsham and Del (Jenny) Vanhook; grandchildren, Gillian, Todd, Luke, Aaron and Chloe; great-grandchildren, Annabelle, Owen and Graysen; and several nieces, nephews, other extended family and many friends.
Warren was born in Appalachia, Va., to Spurgeon and Maggie Vanhook. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, James, Gene and Mary Fae.
Warren was a member of Compass Christian Church in Mechanicsville, Va., and formerly was a member of Etna Green Church of Christ. He served his country in the National Guard. Known to friends and family as “Doc,” Warren was a lifelong learner who loved to study. He earned an associate degree in liberal arts from LaSalle University. Warren graduated from the printing apprenticeship program at R.R. Donnelly and Sons, Warsaw, in 1962. He worked as a retoucher in the printing industry throughout his life and owned his own print shop, Riverside Graphics, for several years.
Warren was a skilled craftsman in carpentry and building projects. He did all the finishing work on his own home near Etna Green, where he raised his family and enjoyed being an outdoorsman. He enjoyed gardening, hiking, camping, reading, music and chess. He was always found working on new ideas and projects. He was well-known for his quick wit and sense of humor. Warren had a special interest in mentoring youth and served as a scoutmaster, youth sponsor and young adult Sunday School teacher. He was a man of strong faith who worked passionately in church leadership. He made friends easily and was faithfully devoted to his family.
The family is appreciative of the prayers and support during Warren’s illness. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, at act.alz.org and the Wounded Warrior Project at www.woundedwarriorproject.org. Arrangements are with Weymouth Funeral Home, Newport News, Va.
