Winona Lake Clerk-Treasurer Race
Dear Editor,
Most of the Concerned Citizens who signed the letter supporting Heather James to be clerk-treasurer do not come to the Winona Lake Town Council meetings with any form of regular attendance.
I have been there many times, and my husband, Jerry Nelson, attends almost every council meeting.
Heather never asks questions about anything presented whether she is there in person or on Zoom. Never is a strong word for me to use, but I am using it.
Has she questioned the past or current clerk/treasurer? Again, the answer is no. Has she made any suggestions on the performance of the clerk/treasurer, even in the last three meetings everyone seems upset about? The answer is no.
Heather seems very nice, but I have not heard anything that assures me she knows anything about how to do the work in the office of the clerk/treasurer’s office. I would say it appears the selection of Heather James is not based on qualification, but rather on someone’s desire to totally control the clerk/treasurer’s office.
I hope the citizens of Winona Lake think about the fact that the clerk-treasurer is the only day-to-day elected official in the town office, and independence to do the job is very important.
We do not have an elected mayor. We have had the same town manager since I moved here at age 55. I am now 81 years old. That is unusual in America.
Laurie Renier can do the work of clerk/treasurer in a fine manner. Give her the support she needs.
