WARSAW — A Warsaw woman was recently arrested after allegedly battering a child.

Jayme Marie Staner, 30, 2106 Brookview Drive, Warsaw, is charged with domestic battery to a person less than 14 years of age by a person at least 18 years of age, a level 6 felony; and domestic battery, a class A misdemeanor.

On Dec. 28, 2022, a Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Office deputy spoke with a man about a child abuse allegation. A man said he retrieved three children from a residence when he noticed one of the children had bruises on their arm.

According to court documents, the child said Staner caused the injuries. Staner told the man the child was throwing a temper tantrum and wanted to fight her. She said she held the child’s arms behind their back to stop them from acting out.

A Safe Harbor Child Advocacy Center representative interviewed the three children on Dec. 29, 2022. The middle child said Staner grabbed the oldest child and wrapped their hands behind their back, which bruised the oldest child’s arm. The middle child also said Staner pushed the oldest child’s head against a wall three or four times. The youngest child said Staner “whooped” the oldest child.

In an interview, the oldest child said Staner covered their mouth, put their arms behind their back, and bashed their head against a wall because they misbehaved.

During an interview with a KCSO detective, Staner said the oldest child was misbehaving and she put the child against a wall for five minutes as punishment. She denied grabbing or picking up the child.

Upon being shown the child’s injuries, Staner said she did not do that and didn’t notice any marks on the child when they arrived at her home. She could not give the detective a valid reason about the child’s injuries.

For this case, Staner was booked in the Kosciusko County Jail on April 21, with a $6,000 surety and cash bond.
