Sheriff’s Son Violates Probation With New Criminal Charge

HUNTERTOWN — The son of Kosciusko County Sheriff Jim Smith has recently violated his terms of probation after a traffic stop in Allen County resulted in the discovery of drugs.
Zachary M.L. Smith, 20, 1460 N. SR 5, Larwill, is charged with possession of a controlled substance, a class A misdemeanor, in Allen County.
On April 15, Allen County Police officers pulled over a vehicle in Huntertown. Smith was a passenger in the vehicle. Upon searching Smith’s person, officers found an object containing three blue “M-30” pills.
According to court documents, Smith said the pills were not his and that he did not have a prescription for them. The pills weighed a total of 3.7 grams.
Smith’s sentencing in the Allen County case is scheduled for 9 a.m. June 9.
In September 2022, Smith was sentenced to one year on probation in Kosciusko County for criminal charges stemming from a July 2021 incident in North Webster.
During the incident, Smith provided marijuana to a 14-year-old child, with the two engaging in sexual activity.
A petition for probation violation was filed in Smith’s Kosciusko County case on May 12, with a hearing on the violation scheduled for 9 a.m. June 20, in Kosciusko Superior Court Two.
