CR 17 Expansion Continues
News Release
GOSHEN — Work is slated to resume on the CR 17 extension project. The Elkhart County Highway Department and commissioners are brainstorming ideas how to establish safety for all who use the roadway.
During the Elkhart County Commissioners meeting Monday, July 17, the board approved payment of $200,000 for the pedestrian bike bridge construction, on CR 17, over US 33 and nearby railroad tracks.
Suzie Weirick, commissioner, mentioned several deaths and serious injuries in the area that have occurred since 2015 that prove the necessity for a bridge on the overpass. The bridge is expected to be just as convenient for cyclists and walkers as it is for vehicles trying to avoid being stopped by a train.
The required total local match is $1.7 million, with $1.5 million being drawn from the North East TIF and the remaining $200,000 being drawn from EDIT Funds. An additional $425,000 was appropriated to pay for a construction inspection for the project.
Also approved was an additional appropriation for the remaining funds needed to pay for the CR 17 extension to CR 142.
Commissioners approved signage for the new Hubbard Hill’s Early Language Center, 28070 CR 24, Elkhart. Even though Hubbard Hill’s new facility technically is located within Elkhart’s city limits, the best place for the sign is in a space that is on county land, not city land.
Commissioners approved Crossroad Community Church’s, 57415 Alpha Drive, Goshen, expansion project. The expansion project will provide a larger playground area.
Commissioners approved two $65,000 stipends drawn from Middlebury East TIF Fund and the Middlebury Southeast TIF Fund to go toward engineering costs of a new water tower.
The Elkhart County Redevelopment Commission is int he process of liquidating the Middlebury South Ag TIF District. Assets left in the TIF are allocated toward the CR 37/CR 20 reconstruction project and a nearby fencing project.
