State Prison In Michigan City Expected To Close In Four Years
Press Release
MICHIGAN CITY — The Indiana State Prison in Michigan City is expected to close in a few years.
The closure was publicly discussed at a state budget committee meeting on Friday, Aug. 4, when the Indiana Department of Correction requested funding for the construction of a new 4,200-bed facility on the site of Westville Correctional Facility.
Once the project is completed, the new facility will combine and replace both Westville and ISP.
According to the budget committee’s agenda, “the current Westville facility was originally designed as a state mental health facility and does not meet modern safety and security standards or the operational needs of both staff and offenders. Similar costly improvements can also be avoided with the closure of ISP in Michigan City, a facility that originally opened in 1860. The newly constructed facility will include security upgrades, expanded healthcare and education services, recidivism programming, and improved operational efficiency.”
The project is expected to be complete within four years.
