Tyson Foods Closes Cordyn Processing Plant, Among Others

CORDYN — Tyson Foods Inc. announced Monday, Aug. 7, it will be closing four chicken processing plants, including one in Cordyn. The other closing plants are located in North Little Rock, Ark.; Dexter, and Noel, Mo.
Tyson is seeking to lower costs by closing these plants and shifting production to other facilities in the first two quarters of the fiscal year 2024. The Cordyn plant is expected to close around March 1, 2024. The number of impacted employees is not being provided, but the company says it is working with state and local officials, including the Indiana Department of Workforce Development, to provided those affected with the resources and assistance available.
Tyson has been trying to cut costs for several months now. Late last year, it closed its corporate offices in Chicago and North Dakota, concentrating its workforce in Arkansas, where it is based. In March, it announced it would be closing two other plants in Arkansas and Virginia to make use of other facilities. In April, it laid off 10% of its senior leadership and 10% of its corporate workers in the face of high inflation on labor, grains and other costs.
According to Tyson’s fiscal third-quarter financial results, which were posted Monday, Aug. 7, the company had a loss or $417 million, or $1.18 per share, for the period ended Saturday, July 1, 2023. The previous year, it earned $750 million, or $2.07 per share. The total revenue for the quarter was 13.4 billion, down from $13.5 billion the previous year.
Tyson still expects total revenue for 2023 in the range of $53 billion to $54 billion.
