Audit: Isolation, Restraint Of Indiana Students Not Accurately Reported
Staff Report
INDIANAPOLIS — Some Indiana schools are not accurately reporting the use of student isolation and restraint despite a law intended to curb those interventions, a state audit found.
An investigation by WFYI of Indianapolis in June raised questions about how the law is being applied, prompting an audit by the Indiana Department of Education.
The state found most schools audited had records that matched their reported data, but several schools showed mismatches. The Department of Education is now calling for improved record keeping and reporting.
The state law requiring schools to report data was intended to reduce use of isolation and restraint, measures deemed potentially harmful to students.
