Mentone To Keep Police Department

MENTONE — Mentone will keep its police department.
At its meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 6, the Mentone Town Council unanimously agreed on that issue.
The discussion came up due to the town losing its two current officers. Town Marshal Jim Eads confirmed last week to media members he’s leaving his position due to a move to Tennessee.
At Wednesday’s meeting, Eads said Deputy Marshal Jacob Bill had put in his two-week notice and then left to take a job in Texas.
Eads’ last working day is Monday, Oct. 30.
He asked council members what they’d like to do with the department, noting “there are provisions that (he would) have to make to close that office” if the council opted to discontinue it.
Council members chose to keep the department and work to hire a new marshal. They opted to hold off on hiring a new deputy until a marshal is in place so the marshal can weigh in on any potential hires.
The council also agreed to accept applications for town marshal through Friday, Sept. 15.
Council President Jill Gross noted that would allow for Eads to provide “input.”
People may get applications by reaching out to Eads or Town-Clerk Treasurer Amanda Yaprak at the town hall, with them also able to email applications if needed.
