COLUMBIA CITY — A Columbia City woman was recently arrested for allegedly battering a child and police officer.
Nina Baron, 37, 1195 E. Wildwood Drive, Columbia City, is charged with domestic battery resulting in bodily injury to a person under 14 years of age, a level 5 felony; strangulation and battery against a public safety official, both level 6 felonies; and resisting law enforcement, a class A misdemeanor.
On Sept. 4, deputies with the Whitley County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a woman throwing and breaking items in a house. Upon arrival at the scene, one of the deputies saw Baron standing in a driveway.
According to court documents, Baron was irate and yelled at the deputy to “do his job.” A man at the scene said he had a verbal argument with Baron, who had been drinking, when Baron began throwing and breaking items in the home.
The man said he left the home for most of the afternoon to avoid confrontation. Upon returning to the scene, a child ran from the home and said Baron grabbed them by the back of their neck.
The child told deputies Baron grabbed the back of their neck and felt like they couldn’t breathe when this happened. Deputies did not notice any marks on the child, who said Baron grabbed them by their right arm as well.
A breath test sample from Baron resulted in a 0.19% BrAC. Baron continued to be rude and argumentative while attempting to push deputies away to avoid being secured in a police vehicle.
While being booked in the Whitley County Jail, Baron grabbed one of the officer’s necks, which left red marks on the front of the officer’s neck after the struggle.
Baron was booked in the Whitley County Jail on Sept. 4.
