Kroger And Albertsons To Sell Hundreds Of Stores
News Release
INDIANA — Kroger and Albertsons are on track to sell more than 400 of their stores and other assets for $1.9 billion. The sales will clear a path for a merger that will unify two of the nation’s grocery giants.
The 413 stores and three brand names are being sold to C&S Wholesale Grocers. The three band names being acquired by C&S are Carrs, Mariano’s and QFC. Kroger will also dismantle Debi Lilly Design, Primo Taglio, Open Nature, ReadyMeals and Waterfront Bistro private label brands. In the deal, C&S will also acquire eight distribution centers and two office spaces.
No stores in Indiana are being affected by the sale.
All gas stations and pharmacies associated with the sold stores will remain and continue regular operations.
The two grocery giants agreed to merge in October 2022. Kroger placed a $20 billion bid for Albertsons. Kroger will assume $4.7 billion of Albertsons’ debt. The deal is on track to close sometime early next year.
To secure FTC clearance, Kroger may require C&S to acquire an additional 237 stores in specific regions. C&S was founded in 1918 and currently runs Grand Union grocery stores and Piggly Wiggly franchise.
