Nappanee Man Arrested For Allegedly Battering Pregnant Woman, Police Officer
Staff Report
NAPPANEE — A Nappanee man was recently arrested for allegedly battering a pregnant woman and police officer.
Brent Edward Hollar, 35, 502 E. Van Buren St., Nappanee, is charged with domestic battery resulting in bodily injury to a pregnant woman, criminal confinement resulting in bodily injury, obstruction of justice, and strangulation, all level 5 felonies; intimidation, battery against a public safety official, and resisting law enforcement, all level 6 felonies; and disorderly conduct, a class B misdemeanor.
On Sept. 9, a Nappanee Police officer responded to a domestic incident. Upon arrival, the officer saw a woman with dried blood on her lips and redness to her face. According to court documents, the woman, who is currently five months pregnant, said a fight involving her and Hollar lasted for several hours.
Officers noticed the woman also had redness and swelling around her eyes, redness on her neck and forehead, and a scrape on her chest. She said Hollar became angry about her not picking him up from work. Hollar took the woman’s phone and smacked her with an open hand across the face twice.
While driving to Nappanee from Warsaw, Hollar pulled off the roadway and the woman left the vehicle. Hollar allegedly grabbed the woman by her shoulders, picked her up, and put her back in the vehicle.
Upon returning to a home in Nappanee, Hollar threw objects in the residence, grabbed the woman by her hair and headbutted her. At one point, Hollar pinned the woman’s head to a bed and placed his hands around her neck, causing the woman to nearly black out. He threatened to kill her and punched her in the face. Hollar also prevented the woman from leaving the house.
About an hour before being taken into custody for the battery, Hollar called a police officer and asked how to make the case against him go away. When the officer said the case would not go away, Hollar became irate and attempted to call the officer an additional 14 times.
As officers attempted to take him into custody, Hollar disregarded officers’ commands and resisted arrest. During the incident, Hollar’s head hit an officer’s head. The officer also sustained a laceration to his right hand.
While being taken to a local hospital for medical clearance, Hollar continually screamed and refused to listen to law enforcement.
Hollar was booked in the Elkhart County Correctional Complex on Sept. 9.
