WARSAW — A Warsaw man will serve a three-year sentence locally after battering a pregnant woman.
Tardarious Deshay Holden, 27, Warsaw, was charged with domestic battery resulting in bodily injury to a pregnant woman, a level 5 felony. Four additional criminal charges were all dismissed as part of a plea agreement.
Holden was sentenced in Kosciusko Superior Court One on Thursday, Dec. 14.
For domestic battery to a pregnant woman, Kosciusko Superior Court One Judge Karin McGrath sentenced Holden to three years in the Kosciusko County Jail. One year will be executed and two years were suspended on probation. McGrath said she had no objection to Holden serving the executed portion of his sentence through the county’s work release or community corrections programs.
Holden is prohibited from possessing firearms. A no-contact order between Holden and the victim remains in effect.
At sentencing, the victim’s aunt testified on Holden’s behalf. She described Holden as “well-mannered and respectful,” and that Holden learning how to handle his anger “would be a great blessing.”
Defense Attorney Cory Spreen said Holden was a good candidate for probation due to Holden’s lack of criminal history.
“That circumstance was terrifying (for the victim),” said McGrath. “I hope this is the end of your criminal record…you have the potential to learn better coping skills.”
On Sept. 6, a Warsaw Police officer took a domestic battery report at a local hospital. A woman who was four months pregnant at the time said Holden battered her on Sept. 4. He hit the woman’s entire body and caused the inside of her lower lip to split open and actively bleed.
