News Release
WARSAW — Hadley Burbrink and Morgan Himes are working at the Bowen Center Health Clinic through the Warsaw Area Career Center’s Work-Based Learning program offered by Warsaw Community Schools.
Hadley Burbrink
Burbrink is the daughter of Aaron and Rachel Burbrink. She plans to attend college to study nursing but is not yet sure what college she might attend. Leading up to college, though, she said her responsibilities at the Bowen clinic are letting her gain experience in rooming patients, doing patient intakes, labs and tests, taking vital signs and helping out providers.
How has this position been helpful to you? “This job has taught me so much already and it’s only been a little over two months,” Burbrink said in a news release. “It is preparing me for nursing school, and I’ve expanded my skills already. The best decision I made in high school was to take my CCMA junior year and utilize my skills in Work-Based-Learning my senior year.”
What have you learned? “I have learned a lot about the health care field in general, but mostly good patient care and how to help the patient to the best of my ability. I have learned a lot being in a clinic and being around patients on a daily basis. I’m a hands-on learner, so this is helping me a lot to be able to actually work in this setting.”
How is this job preparing you for the future? “This is going to help me tremendously in nursing school,” Burbrink said. “I learned a lot throughout my classes at the high school. This job has expanded on that and being able to use my skills.”
What do you like about this job? “I enjoy being able to help patients on a daily basis. I enjoy learning much more about the nursing and health care profession. I love my co-workers and staff. They are very helpful and are always willing to answer my questions,” said Burbrink. “Katie Berg, who trained me, has been very helpful and a great person to learn from at the clinic. I hope to be as good of a nurse as her one day.”
What Career Center classes have you taken in your pathway? “Principles of Healthcare, Medical Terminology, Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA).”
Morgan Himes
Himes is the daughter of Matt and Rachelle Himes. She plans to attend Vanderbilt University to become a psychiatrist nurse practitioner. At the Bowen clinic, she is checking in patients, helping to give injections, taking vital signs and helping out wherever needed.
How has this position been helpful to you? “This position has opened my eyes to a different career pathway,” Himes said in a news release. “I would have never thought about being an NP and working in the psychology world. I recently shadowed an NP on the psych side at Bowen and she made me have a different perspective on psychology.”
What have you learned? “I have learned to communicate better with strangers and feel more comfortable with my knowledge.”
How is this job preparing you for the future? “This job has prepared me for my future in being a nurse by making me more comfortable with patients and in my skills as a medical assistant.”
What do you like about this job? “I like this job at the Bowen Center because I can learn something new every day and have good friendships with the girls I work with,” Himes said.
What Career Center classes have you taken in your pathway? “PLTW Honors Biomedical Sciences, Dual Credit Medical Terminology.”
Jennifer Carmona serves as the supervisor for the students’ experience at the Bowen Center Health Clinic.
How is this job preparing these students for the future? “it will help them gain the experience needed to work in a health clinic,” Carmona said.
What do you think of the WACC Work-Based Learning program? “I feel it is a great program to help students learn jobs.”
Why were you willing to partner with the WACC in this program? “My directors thought it would be helpful and beneficial for the students to learn how to work and function in a health clinic.”
