MARSHALL COUNTY — A Culver man died after his vehicle was hit by a train.

At 8:52 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 18, the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department was notified of a car versus train crash on SR 17 south of 15th Road.

Scott Sorg, 57, Culver,​ the driver and only occupant of the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene. ​During the investigation it was revealed Sorg was driving north on SR 17 and ​drove around the downed crossing arms and pulled into the path of a westbound train. ​

Sorg’s vehicle was struck on the passenger side by the train. ​The vehicle was thrown to the west and came to rest on the south side of the tracks approximately 100 yards west of SR 17. The railroad police and investigators were also called to the scene to assist. ​It is unknown at this time if drugs or alcohol were a factor.

​The collision is currently under investigation by the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department. Marshall County was assisted by the Marshall County Coroner,​ Culver Police,​ Culver Fire,​ Culver EMS,​ Indiana DNR,​ Norfolk and Southern Railroad Police and Norfolk and Southern Railroad ​inspectors.
