More Details Released On Firearm Discharge At Rochester Wrestling Tourney
Staff Report
ROCHESTER — More details have been released on the discharge of a firearm during a weekend wrestling invitational at Rochester Community High School.
Scott William Yeager, 44, 6861 Plymouth Goshen Trail, Bremen, is charged with criminal recklessness, possession of cocaine, and possession of methamphetamine, all level 5 felonies; possession of a firearm on school property, a level 6 felony; and possession of marijuana and possession of a knife on school property, both class B misdemeanors.
On March 2, Fulton County School Resource Officer Rick Utter requested additional law enforcement units at Rochester Community High School for a report of a loud noise at the gymnasium. The noise occurred during a wrestling invitational at the high school, with 11 school districts participating. Officers spoke with Yeager, who was a person of interest in the incident after exhibiting nervous behavior after the loud noise.
Upon searching Yeager’s person, officers found marijuana, handgun ammunition, and a knife. Officers also found two firearms and a second knife in Yeager’s backpack. Both firearms were fully loaded, and one of them had a spent shell casing in its chamber. Officers also found a hole in a backpack pouch where one of the firearms was located, as well as a bullet underneath the bleachers. Prior to his backpack being searched, Yeager denied having anything in his backpack that would make a loud noise.
Yeager said he was at the school to watch a relative at the invitational. When asked if any of his firearms were discharged at the gym, Yeager said they were not.
Surveillance footage from the school showed Yeager sitting in the bleachers and going through his backpack when the crowd suddenly turned toward him. Yeager appeared to have no reaction.
While being booked in the Fulton County Jail, officers found meth and cocaine on Yeager’s person. Prior to being searched at the jail, Yeager was asked if he had any additional contraband on his person, which he denied even after being told it would result in an enhanced charge against him if contraband was found.
At the jail, Yeager again denied that his firearm went off.
