BURKET – Burket Town Council decided Thursday, March 14, to go back and try to get more information about spring cleanup services.

Councilwoman Debra Deniston said she received a couple quotes for dumpsters for spring cleanup.
She said the quote from Stafford’s was the cheapest, with an 8-ton, 30-yard dumpster for a week at $500.44. There was an additional $70 per ton if the town goes over the 8 tons.

The other quote she received was from Waste Management for 4-tons for a week for $931.42.

Deniston said she called other waste management companies and was told they don’t service Burket.
Council President Bill Rayburn said Stafford’s has an agreement with Burket if a resident calls and pays for something to be picked up ahead of time, they’ll do it.

He said what he thought the council agreed to try to do in February was to have someone go around town and pick stuff up instead of having a dumpster sitting in town. The town would pay for everyone’s stuff to be picked up.

Councilwoman Lena Ball asked, if the town is able to set something out, if they could send out a townwide newsletter to let residents know what the waste management service will and will not take for spring cleanup. Rayburn said he thought that was the idea.

Deniston said she can call Stafford’s back and have a follow-up conversation regarding them picking things up instead of doing a dumpster.

In other business, the council:

• Will send out code violation warning letters to seven properties.

• Heard Street Superintendent Brad Bibler saw some railroad employees at the crossing on Walnut Street and believes they put some pitch in the area.

• Learned a hiccup came up regarding the $2,000 payment for the emergency generators at the Burket Fire Department and Training Center.

Rayburn said a NIPSCO bill came in for upgrading the gas meter that was supposed to be paid by the fire department that was paid by both the fire department and the town. The town will have to try to get a refund from NIPSCO for that and then Rayburn said they will be able to pay the $2,000 for the emergency generator for the training center.
