CLAYPOOL — The Claypool Town Council provided an update to citizens on spring clean-up and discussed trash issues during a March 19 meeting.
Council President Benny Stage Jr. said the council only received one bid for a large trash pick-up day in the spring. The bid was from Borden Waste-Away, Elkhart, for providing large dumpsters for the town to utilize. However, Stage noted issues in the past with the dumpsters overflowing.
Council is considering seeking another bid or potentially having Borden’s go door-to-door for large items. If the town decides to use door-to-door services with Borden’s, a large trash pick-up day would not occur until June.
The council will provide more information on large trash pick-up at its April meeting.
Council also discussed the possibility of creating a trash ordinance for the town, which would include the implementation of fines for those who disregard the ordinance. An issue regarding a resident on Section Street leaving their overflowing trash bin out all week long was brought to council.
Council also:
- Renewed the town’s annual agreement for fire protection with the Claypool Fire Department.
- Approved a preventative maintenance agreement with J&K Communications in the amount of $875 for the town’s new tornado siren.
- Heard from Town Superintendent Danny Warner that grave decorations at Graceland Cemetery must be removed by April 1. They can be put back on May 1.
- Learned Habitat for Humanity will have an open house for two homes in Claypool at 5:15 p.m. Thursday, March 28. The houses are at 409 S. Graceland Ave.
- Informed the community that council is working on creating a three-to-five-year strategic plan for Claypool.
The council’s next meeting is at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 16, at the Claypool Lions Club building.
