News Release
SOUTH WHITLEY — The South Whitley Community Public Library has several events on tap this summer.
July Blood Drive
The Red Cross typically faces a drop in blood donations during the summer, just when needs are increasing. People get busy with summer activities and travel, meaning an increase in injuries that could require a blood transfusion but also a drop-off in the number of donors visiting blood drives.
If you want to help increase the blood supply, schedule a time to visit the bloodmobile that will be at the South Whitley Community Public Library, 201 E. Front St., South Whitley. The bloodmobile will be there from 1 to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 24. You can schedule a time to make a donation by calling the Red Cross at (800) 733-2767 or by going online to RedCrossBlood.org and entering swplib. The blood drive will take place in the library’s auditorium. Donors may enter the library through the auditorium doors located on the Columbia Street side of the building or any other library entrance.
Whoa, Man!
The music of the iconic women of rock will be highlighted when Whoa, Man! performs at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 25.
Dance and sing along to the songs from the well-known female rockers of the last six decades, including Pat Benatar, Carole King, the Cranberries, the Supremes, Joan Jett, Stevie Nicks, Gwen Stefani, Melissa Etheridge, Paula Abdul, Blondie, Adele, Linda Ronstadt, Aretha Franklin, Janis Joplin, Tina Turner, Veruca Salt, Janet Jackson, the Bangles, the Go-Go’s and many more.
The free concert takes place at the South Whitley Town Park, so bring your blanket or lawn chairs to enjoy the music. In the event of inclement weather, the concert will be moved to the library’s auditorium. There is plenty of room to dance at both locations.
This is the second concert of the season hosted by the library. The series wraps up on Aug. 15 with OK Boomer.
Movies, Foam Party
Children’s summer activities at the library wrap up the week of July 22 with two movies and a Bubble Buddies foam party.
Children can enjoy free movies and popcorn at 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 23, and Thursday, July 25, in the library’s auditorium. First up is a movie about a lightning-fast hedgehog, and second up is a classic fairy tale about a beast and a beauty. Check the library’s website at swcplib.com for movie titles.
The South Whitley Cinema will be showing the latest chapter in the “Fast & Furious” saga at 6:30 p.m. Friday, July 26. Free movies are shown each month at the library. The schedule for the remainder of the year can be found on the events calendar on the library’s website.
The week ends with a foam party at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 27, at the town park gazebo. Kids of all ages are welcome to play in the piles of foam produced by a cannon. Lightweight shorts and shirts are suggested or swimsuits and goggles for kids who will play in the foam for a longer period of time. A towel is also recommended although the foam and wetness will dry in the sun.
The foam used in the event is hypoallergenic, dye-free, biodegradable and safe for kids, pets and the environment.
All events are free and open to children of all ages. Participation in library summer reading events is not required to join in the any of the activities.
