Marvin Macklin
Marvin DeLane Macklin was born in Portland, Ind., on Sept. 25, 1938. He passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 3, 2024, with loved ones near.
His parents were George Isaac Macklin and Iva Elizabeth Miller, both of Jay County, Indiana. The family moved a lot. Marvin attended six different schools in his first six years of education. The family settled in Geneva, Ind., by the time he was ready for seventh grade through his high school years. It was there he met his wife of 67 years, Carol Marlene Franks. They both graduated from Geneva High School in 1956 and were married on June 30, 1957.
Marvin was a music lover, played the piano and was a percussionist in high school, college and the National Guard Band. He studied at Ball State University and worked in the art department and taught drum lessons to pay for his education. By 1965, he had earned a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Arts in elementary education.
He had an extensive teaching career. He taught in the Indiana public schools for 30 years. In 1991, Marvin and Carol moved to the Marshall Islands, where he spent six years teaching at Calvary Christian School and the College of the Marshall Islands. They settled in Las Cruces, N.M., in 1997, where he taught at Dona Ana Community College for another 20 years.
During their marriage, Marvin and Carol journeyed to 49 states and more than 20 countries on five continents.
Surviving are his wife, Carol, of Knoxville, Tenn.; a brother, Robert (Joy) Macklin, of Las Cruces, N.M.; three children, Dennis (Sarah) Macklin, also of Knoxville, Tenn., Doug (Dawn) Macklin, of Warsaw, and Stephanie (Brad) Hapner, of Winona Lake. He was blessed with 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, John Carl Macklin, of Ossian.
