News Release
INDIANAPOLIS — On Wednesday, Aug. 7, 42 Indiana farmers were recognized for their outstanding conservation practices that protect Indiana’s waterways.
The Indiana Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts hosted this annual event, celebrating farmers who have implemented best management practices like cover crops and filter strips. These methods improve soil health and prevent erosion, safeguarding Indiana’s streams, rivers, and lakes. In Elkhart County, David Hess took home the award. Kosciusko County’s winner was Thomas Parker. The winner in Marshall County was Jesse Reichert. In Wabash County, winners were Austin Greer and Dale Farms, Inc. The Whitley County winner was Frank Johnson.
The River Friendly Farmer Award program, sponsored by Indiana Farm Bureau, The Nature Conservancy, and the Indiana State Department of Agriculture, is held during the Indiana State Fair. This year’s awardees join over 1,100 farmers who have been honored since the program’s inception in 2000.
Farmers and their families enjoyed a day at the fair, including a complimentary lunch provided by Indiana Pork, the American Dairy Association of Indiana and the Indiana Beef Cattle Association.
Lieutenant Governor Suzanne Crouch addressed the recipients, expressing gratitude for their contributions to the state’s high quality of life.
