Syracuse Public Library – Learn ‘Weird History’ With New Club
News Release
SYRACUSE — Syracuse Public Library has released its activities starting the week of Monday, Sept. 9.
New Club Dives Into Weird History
Elementary-aged children in fourth grade and above can join Syracuse Public Library’s new Weird History Club. History will come to life as children learn that sometimes fact is stranger than fiction. Each month covers a new weird topic from history.
The first meeting is at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12, in the downstairs meeting room and will cover the Carrington Event of 1859. Children will create a sun craft that shows the sun’s many layers while decorating its photosphere with sunspots and solar flares.
Mature third graders who love history are welcome to join the club if they can pay attention.

Libraries Partner On Artist Circle
Syracuse Public Library and North Webster Community Public Library are teaming up to hold the YA Artist Circle. Teens in grades 6-12 can join the libraries from 4-5 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10, at The River Coffeehouse, 127 S. Main St., North Webster.
Bring writing or artwork to share, whether it is your own creation or a piece that has inspired you lately. For information, contact Hanna Kunkel at [email protected].
Adult Programming
During the week of Sept. 9, adults can participate in several programs, including SPL’s popular mahjong group. Players of all skill levels can join the tables at 10 a.m. on Mondays and at 1 p.m. on Wednesdays; both sessions meet in the downstairs meeting room.
The knit and crochet club meets at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10, in the upstairs sitting area. Bring a project to work or browse the library’s books for inspiration to start a new project.
Register to join Craft and Sip at 4:30-5:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12, in the downstairs meeting room. This month the group will make string art using string, nails and hammers. Visit https://tinyurl.com/SPLStringArtCraft to register each crafter separately. Since this project uses hammers, it is only available to adults.
For information about any adult program, email Emilia Layne at [email protected].
Young Adult Programming
Teen Cafe meets from 4-5:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 9, and welcomes teens in grades 9-12. Teens will paint the Rosalyn Jones Room’s “Jenga” set during this session.
Young adult “Dungeon and Dragons” meets from 4:30-5:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12, in the Rosalyn Jones Rooms. New players are always welcome at the table, and the library has extra dice available for use.
The young adult writing club will play story roulette from 3:30-4:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 13, in the Rosalyn Jones Room. Members will write down components of a story on sticky notes, which will then be mixed up before being distributed. Each writer will write using their club member’s story ideas.
Children’s Programming
CrafterNoon meets at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10, in the downstairs meeting room. During this session, children will create blackout poetry.
Storytime meets at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11, in the children’s department. There will be new stories to enjoy while preschoolers learn more about the alphabet and pick up some Spanish and American Sign Language. There will also be a craft related to this week’s letter, “E.”
SPL’s homeschool class also meets at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11, in the downstairs meeting room. Children in first through third grade will learn about apple oxidation.
