Syracuse Public Library — SPL Hosts Book Sale Oct. 11

SYRACUSE — The Friends of the Syracuse Public Library will host its annual book sale. It will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11, and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, in the Syracuse Public Library’s downstairs meeting room.
The sale will feature hundreds of gently used, high-quality books in all genres, including young adult and children’s titles. Purchase a cloth Friends bag for $10 and stuff it to the brim. The Friends will also have plastic bags that can be stuffed for $5.
All proceeds from the sale benefit the Syracuse Public Library. In the past, the Friends have purchased a drinking fountain, changing table, snacks and the library’s anytime pickup lockers.
In addition to the book sale, the Friends will bring back its popular coffee social from 10:30 a.m. until noon on Wednesday, Oct. 9, in the upstairs sitting area.
Artifacts On Display At The Library
The community can get up close and personal with Syracuse’s history during the traveling artifact exhibit, presented by the Syracuse Public Library, Syracuse-Wawasee Historical Museum and Indiana Humanities.
The exhibit makes its debut at the library from Oct. 7-11. The community can view it upstairs during the library’s hours of 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday and Wednesday, and then from noon until 8 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday. The exhibit will move to the Syracuse-Wawasee Historical Museum Friday, Oct. 11, and will be viewable there in a special display case.
This exhibit is a part of the library’s “One State/One Story: All That She Carried” programming, which is presented by Indiana Humanities in partnership with the Indiana Center for the Book and the Indiana State Library as part of Indiana Humanities’ Advancing Racial Equity Project, supported by Lilly Endowment.
Young Adult Programming
TeenTober is live at the Syracuse Public Library. The library will have special programs throughout October and a chance to win a LEGO bonsai set. Teens in sixth through 12th grade can sign up for the reading challenge on the Beanstack app and then read for one hour by Thursday, Oct. 31, to be entered into the drawing for the LEGO bonsai set.
Teen Cafe will meet from 4-5:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 7, in the Rosalyn Jones Room and make customized, spooky stamps. The cafe is open to teens in ninth through 12th grade.
Artist Circle meets from 4-5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8, at Lakeside Coffee Co., 409 S. Harkless Drive, Syracuse. This program is a partnership between the Syracuse Public Library and North Webster Community Public Library and gives teens an avenue to share their artwork.
Additionally, the “Dungeons and Dragons” club will meet from 4-6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 10, in the Rosalyn Jones Room, and the young adult writing club will meet from 3:30-4:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11, in the Rosalyn Jones Room.
Children’s Programming
School-aged children will learn how to create leaf portraits during the next CrafterNoon at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8, in the downstairs meeting room. Later in the week, families can attend story time at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 9, in the children’s department. The home-school class also meets at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 9, in the downstairs meeting room. Children in first through third grade will learn about Columbus Day.
Older home-schooled students in grades four and above can attend the Weird History Club at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 10, in the children’s department. This month they will learn about the unique roles animals played in World War I.
