WARSAW — Eight-year-old Jy’el Mack and five-year-old Jyon Mack are getting a home with a yard with space for a trampoline.
Their mother, Brianna Adams, said that was something the boys had been wanting at a groundbreaking ceremony for the home on Wednesday, Oct. 30.
The house, to be located on a lot at the corner of Lyon and Ellsworth Streets in Warsaw, is Kosciusko County Habitat for Humanity’s 39th build.
“We are beyond excited,” said Adams. “We never would have been able to have this specific opportunity without Habitat.”
The home will have three bedrooms and one bathroom, with the roof and walls estimated to be completed by winter.
To be eligible for the house, Brianna has to do 250 hours of community service, with her already doing 137 by Thursday.
During the ceremony, Kosciusko County Habitat for Humanity Executive Director Ben Logan thanked The Salvation Army of Warsaw for giving the land for the home to Habitat for Humanity. The Salvation Army’s Worship and Community Center is near the lot.
“We’re just excited to see more people moving into the neighborhood,” said The Salvation Army of Warsaw Corps Administrator Envoy Ken Locke.
Logan noted some of the volunteers helping with the home will be Warsaw Community High School building trades students.
He said the Kosciusko County Community Foundation also helped with the build as it gave Habitat $91,200 for four homes, including that of the Adams and Mack family.
“We’re working more and more with the community foundation to try to tackle affordable housing here in Kosciusko County,” said Logan. “We could not be happier with the partnership with them.”
KCCF Vice President of Programs Alex Hall noted “affordable housing and housing for the workforce continues to be an issue that the community foundation is interested in.”
“We just released an affordable housing study today, so it’s something that we continue to research and find solutions for, and Habitat is a great partner to live out that mission,” he said.
If people wish to give to Kosciusko County Habitat for Humanity or volunteer with building a home, they may do so by going to kosciuskohabitat.org.
“Businesses can also sponsor our build (by giving) money but also (giving) time,” said Logan.
People can also apply for getting a home on the website when the application period is open.
