Veterans Day, originally known as Armistice Day, is a federal holiday in the United States observed each year on Nov. 11 to honor military veterans of the United States Armed Forces. Legally, two minutes of silence is recommended to be observed at 2:11p.m. Eastern Standard Time. Non-essential federal government offices are closed. No mail is delivered. All federal workers are paid for the holiday; those who are required to work on the holiday sometimes receive holiday pay for that day in addition to their wages.

Marking The Boss’ fifth studio album and the only double LP of his career, “The River” included Springsteen’s first major U.S. chart hit, “Hungry Heart.”
- Nov. 11, 1978 — The Cars’ “My Best Friend’s Girl” became the first commercially-released picture disc single. The song, which appeared on the group’s self-titled debut, was a Top 40 hit in the U.S. and a No. 3 hit in the UK.
- Nov. 1, 1969 — After a seven-year absence, Elvis Presley returns to Billboard’s number one position with “Suspicious Minds”
