SYRACUSE — Firefighters remain at the scene of a fire at Main Channel Marina, 720 S. Lakeside Drive, Syracuse. Pickwick Road is closed to traffic at this time. Five fire departments responded.
Damage is expected to be in the millions of dollars to the marina and its inventory.
Turkey Creek Fire Territory was notified around 2:54 a.m. of explosions and a fire at the marina. Syracuse Police Department investigated and could see flames from Palm Drive and Lakeside Drive.
Turkey Creek Fire Territory Fire Chief Mickey Scott reported they received a call of a fire with explosions at the time. The caller was about one-quarter mile away. The police department arrived at the scene and reported flames could be seen from Palm Drive and Lakeside Drive, with the building was fully engulfed.
The fire was on the south side of the building, on the channel, where the offices are located, which at this time is where fire officials believe the fire began. A fire wall between the office and showroom areas appears to have kept the fire from spreading into the shop area.
Most of the damage was contained to the showroom and office areas.
The state fire marshal’s office has arrived at the scene and will begin the investigation. Indiana Department of Environmental Management has also been called.
Firefighters from Benton, Milford, Tippecanoe Township Fire Territory and Warsaw-Wayne Fire Territory were called to the scene with manpower and tanker assists. WWFT was contacted to handle containment of any runoff from the fire into the nearby channels.
