Local Memorial Day Weekend Events
Several Memorial Day events are planned throughout Kosciusko County. The following are the events planned for each town:
Leesburg
The Leesburg community will have a Memorial Day parade and service Monday, May 26. The Boy Scouts will begin events with a flag-raising ceremony before the parade at the town hall. Parade participants are asked to be in place by 10:15 a.m., with the parade commencing at 10:30 a.m. The parade route will begin at the town hall, heading south on Pearl Street, then west on Prairie Street to Leesburg Cemetery, where a service will honor those who have served their country. All veterans, children, businesses and community organizations are invited to participate.
Warsaw
The annual Memorial Day services, conducted by John C. Peterson American Legion Post 49 and James W. Sittler Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1126, will take place Monday, May 26, at Oakwood Cemetery.
The Color Guard, firing squad and other organizational units will form in front of the sexton’s office and begin marching to the amphitheater at 10:55 a.m. The program will be at the cemetery band stand. The welcome will be done by Chuck Hartman, commander of Post 49. The invocation will be conduced by Tom Everett, chaplain of Post 49 and Post 1126.
A roll call of deceased veterans will be read by Bruce Knouff, past commander of Post 49, and Post 1126 Quartermaster Jerry Roach. The Memorial Day address will be presented by State Rep. Dave Wolkins.
Warsaw Community High School band will perform special music. The posting of colors will be conducted by the combined color guards.
After the colors have been retired, the program will proceed to the GAR circle and Legion Circle No. 2, where a presentation of a wreath will be placed on Legion Circle No. 2 by Commander Chuck Hartman and Auxiliary President Kelly Brubaker. Taps will follow the presentation. The program will conclude at Legion Circles No. 1 and No. 3, where wreath presentations will take place at both circles with Taps to follow. A carry-in dinner will be at Post No. 49 following the program; the post will furnish meats.
Milford
Milford will have a parade at 10 a.m. Monday, May 26. A service will be at Milford Cemetery immediately following the parade.
Syracuse
Syracuse’s Memorial Day parade is at 1 p.m., Monday, May 26, followed by a service at Syracuse Cemetery.
North Webster
North Webster will have a parade at 10:45 a.m. and services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, May 26, at North Webster Cemetery. Other services are: 9 a.m. at Thorn Cemetery; 9:30 a.m. at Salem Cemetery; 10 a.m. at Mock Cemetery; and 10:30 a.m. at the American Legion Post No. 253.
Etna Green
A service will be at 10 a.m. Sunday, May 25, at Etna Green United Methodist Church. The community event honors all service members past and present. Following the service, the Legion’s color guard will lay a wreath at Etna Green Cemetery.
Pierceton
Pierceton will have a parade at 11 a.m., Monday, May 26, followed by a service at Brower Park. A carry-in dinner will be held at 1 p.m. at American Legion Post 258, Pierceton.
