Hire Park Looking For Strong Finish
WARSAW – Fall and back to school may be approaching, but Hire Park BMX isn’t done racing.
The track, located on Arthur Street across from Beyer Park at Pike Lake in Warsaw, began hosting riders for the 2014 season in early May, but will continue to run events until the second week of October.
The park as a whole has had an eventful race season, highlighted by the back-to-back Olympic Day and Bob Warnicke races June 21 and 22 as well as the Race For Life fundraising event held just July 19. Hire Park still has one major left on the calendar, which is right around the corner with the Indiana State Race to be held Aug. 17.
Riders from all around the state will gravitate to Hire Park for the State Race, which is the last area major riders will have to earn big points for the year-end finals to be held in September in Portage.
The weekend for the State Race actually starts Aug. 16 in Fort Wayne then heads to Warsaw for day two.
“We will get guys from all over the state showing up trying to get those points for the year-end in Portage,” said Hire Park coordinator Dan Rumple. “It’s always a busy weekend for us because we will get more riders than usual. We have a lot of riders who want to take a stab at it for the first time, but also some big-name pros that need to get points.”
The State Race is broken up into ages and divisions so those more experienced riders are classed separate from the novices and younger riders.
Hire Park officially ends its 2014 campaign Oct. 11 with its last local race, and the Oct. 4 local race is the Chili Race. Every Saturday with the exception of the State Race at Hire Park is reserved for local races, all beginning at 1:30 p.m. Each Tuesday and Thursday through Oct. 9 are practice nights, which begin run from 5-8 p.m.
“We’ve had a pretty good year here, and it shows on the rider’s faces, especially those coming out for the first time,” Rumple said. “It’s always a blast coming out to the track to ride, whether you’re an old dog like me or five years old.”
